Stonington schools believes that literacy happens in all areas of our students lives. This is why we are encouraging you to continue your child’s journey with reading and writing over the summer months. Our community has three local libraries that we partner with regarding summer reading programs that are free and fun for our students. They provide access to books of a wide range of interest and reading levels, and the librarians are excellent resources. We have provided the libraries’ information below, as well as links to their websites for the summer reading program. Within these links you will find the books listed by title and author. In some cases, series are indicated. The joint lists are the result of collaboration between our school librarians, teachers, students, the Stonington Free Library and the Mystic and Noank Library. Remember these are just suggested lists – please investigate additional titles by these authors, by topic and/or genre.
Literacy can always be a family event! Reading in front of your child, with your child and to your child is the best way to encourage the lifelong adventure of discovering new thinking through a text. Newsela is an online resource that is free and offering a summer challenge to students. These are engaging and fun articles that kids can select based off of interest and engagement. Adults love them, too!!! We have provided the link below.
Research shows that most children lose 2-3 months of math learning over the summer. We’re delighted to inform you about a free program offered by TenMarks, an Amazon Company that will provide your child with access to a powerful, personalized summer math program designed to help them reverse summer learning loss.
An hour a week is all it takes for your child to strengthen his/her math skills, and prepare for the year ahead. The TenMarks Summer Math Program will guide your child through their personalized program, one topic at a time, helping them refresh what they know, and learn what they don’t. Each assignment contains embedded instruction (hints, video lessons, and interventions) to ensure success.
We hope you have a wonderful summer filled with fun and learning!!!
