Welcome Letter from Principal

Alicia Sweet Dawe – Principal
Kathryn Irvine – Assistant Principal

Dear Families, Parents and Friends,

Welcome Back, we missed you!!

On behalf of our entire staff, we would like to welcome our new kindergarten students and our returning first, second, third and fourth grade students! It is with great honor and much enthusiasm that we publish our first newsletter for the 2017-2018 school year. Much planning, CONSTRUCTION and hard work has gone into preparing for a successful school year.

Let me begin by introducing myself! My name is Mrs. Dawe and I will be your principal! I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year and I am looking forward to meeting new faces, revisiting with familiar ones, as well as hearing all about your summer adventures! For those of you who have not met me, I taught in Stonington for 14 years and have been in administration for the past 7 years. Currently, this is my fifth year as the Principal at West Vine/West Broad Street schools. I am very excited to work together to make this a fabulous new school year!

I would also like to introduce to you our Assistant Principal, Ms. Kathryn Irvine!

Kathy has taught grades 3, 4 and 5 at Deans Mill School as well as taken on many leadership roles within the district. This has made her transition to West Vine and West Broad Street School seamless. Additionally, Kathy brings over 29 years of experience that has been extremely valuable to our school community. She is student centered and has a warm, nurturing personality that will be appreciated by our staff, students and families. Currently, this is her fourth year as the Assistant Principal at West Vine/West Broad Street Schools.

Additionally, I would like to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to our custodial staff. They worked diligently throughout the summer to clean and ready the school. Many facility updates from structural to technological took place and are continuing to happen as we speak!

All teachers and support staff have spent hours preparing materials, creating child-centered classrooms, and reviewing data. The rooms are beginning to look amazing! Secretaries and office staff have registered new students, put together information packets to be sent home with all students, and organized new materials.

I would also like to extend a special welcome to our incoming Kindergarten students who are new to our schools. I know that this class of 2029-30 is a welcome addition to our community. As you settle in, you will be receiving newsletters from the school office and the classroom teachers.

Please be sure to check your child’s backpack as well as the Stonington Public School’s website, http://www.stoningtonschools.org for notices and updates.

We are very much looking forward to watching the students stream off of the buses and out of cars and to have the hallways filled with the hustle and bustle that has been absent all summer. Old friendships are quickly rekindled and new friendships made. Students swap stories about summer and show off new backpacks and school supplies.

As excited as I am to offer this monthly newsletter, it is the face-to-face interactions that I value most. Please know that we have an open door policy, and welcome any opportunity to meet with you. We are looking forward to our collaboration in providing a safe and nurturing environment as well as a challenging and diverse curriculum.

Remember, grades 1-4 start on Tuesday, September 5th, 2017 and Kindergarten starts on Thursday, Sept. 7th!

This will be a FANTASTIC year!

Sincerely,

Alicia Sweet Dawe, Principal
Kathryn Irvine, Assistant Principal
